Edgardo Riveros MarínUnder Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile

    Edgardo Riveros assumed as Under Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 11th 2014.
    He is a lawyer from the Catholic University of Chile and has a Bachelor of law from the Complutense University of Madrid. Granted a scholarship of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation he studied a Master of Public International Law and Political Science at the University of Bonn.
    He has served as Under Secretary at the Ministry for Governmental Spokesmanship during the administrations of President Aylwin and President Frei Ruiz-Tagle (1990-1997). Additionally he has been Member of the Parliament for two terms (1998- 2006), acting as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the Chamber of Deputies in the timeframe 1998-1999 and 2003-2004.
    He was a member of the Chilean delegation taking part at the 1998 and 2003 United Nations General Assembly. Later on, he served as Under Secretary at the Ministry General of the Presidency during the administration of President Bachelet (2006-2010).
    He has been Professor of Constitutional Law at the Autónoma University and the Central University, both in Chile. He has also taught International Public Law at the University of Chile, Central University, Andrés Bello University and University of the Americas, all of them located in Chile. Moreover, he has served as a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of Chile.
    Under Secretary Riveros has been member of the Chilean Advisory Committee in the International Court of Justice Maritime Boundary Case Peru – Chile, as well as consultant at the International Labour Organization (ILO).
    He was also member of the Presidential Advisory Commission for the Disappeared, political driven Executed and Victims of Political Imprisonment and Torture during the Pinochet Dictatorship from March 2010 until the release of its final report in August 2011.
    Between 2011 and 2014, he acted as Director of the School of Political Science at the Miguel de Cervantes University in Chile and as President of the Democracy and Community Center (CDC) from 2010 until 2014.
    He is a full member of the Hispanic -Luso- American Institute of International Law, the International Law Association and the Chilean Society of International Law.
    Riveros is the author of several specialized publications on international relations and international law.
    During his political career, Under Secretary Riveros has been elected Vice-President of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) in two non-consecutive terms: 1998-2000 and 2004-2006. He has also been PDC Secretary General between 2000 and 2001 and PDC Youth Organization Vice-President between 1971 and 1975.
